I received two books in the Church Basics series from B&H Publishing Group: Understanding Baptism and Understanding Congregational Authority edited by Jonathan Leeman. Both of the books had merits and detriments.
The merits of both books in the series is that they give a clear picture of the doctrinal beliefs of the authors and the editor. If you are interested in learning the views of this particular theological perspective, these are books worth reading.
On the down side, these short books don’t really give a balanced view of the issues covered in the books. Instead, the books are a bit more of an apologetic for their particular beliefs on secondary and tertiary truths. Rather than being books that could unify the Christian body, these books are set up to help those in the authors’ belief system better understand their perspectives.
