Unleashed: Being Conformed to the Image of Christ by Eric Mason lays out the importance and power of progressive sanctification in the life of a Christian. Starting from the base of the gospel and proceeding out of the gospel, the author lays out the theology of God sanctifying us but also our active role by and through Him in our sanctification.
Mason avoids staying too heady thus making sanctification overly mysterious and also avoids being too pragmatic thus making sanctification works-based. Instead, the author weaves the gospel, the Spirit, the Word, prayer, suffering, strongholds, marriage, and the church community into the process of a Christian being progressively conformed more and more into the image of Christ.
Unleashed is an excellent book that could be used as a discipleship tool to help shepherd someone to see the importance of continued growth in the faith. As Mason states, “The more I pastor people through hardships, the more I am convinced that people need deep roots in the truth of God’s Word” (p 74).
