Onward: Engaging the Culture Without Losing the Gospel by Dr. Russell Moore is a well thought out book about constructively engaging the culture around us with the gospel rather than going into a siege mentality.
Rather than bemoaning the “demise of Christianity in America” or railing against the “moral decay” of the age, Dr. Moore summarizes ten cultural areas that can be of concern to Christians and then prescribes a gospel-minded approach to those areas.
A good flavor of the book can be picked up in these introductory words:
The church now has the opportunity to bear witness in a culture that often does not even pretend to share our “values.” This is not a tragedy since we were never given a mission to promote “values” in the first place, but to speak instead of sin and of righteousness and judgment, of Christ and his kingdom. We will now have to articulate concepts we previously assumed…So much the better, since Jesus and the apostles do the same thing…Our end goal is not a Christian America, either of the made-up past or the hoped-for future. Our end goal is the kingdom of Christ, made up of every tribe, tongue, nation, and language” (p 9).
