Book Review: Empowered By His Presence

Empowered By His Presence: Receiving the Strength You Need Each Day by Kevin Harney works well as a book to read through in one sittings, thoughts for daily devotionals for four weeks (the author’s recommendation), or a source to go to during different phases of life.

empoweredThe book guides the reader through pain, community, rest, and mission within the paradigm of being empowered by the presence of God in contrast to seeing ourselves as powerless or powerful enough on our own.  The most delightful section of each chapter (for me) is found in the final paragraphs that sum up how we fall into the heart traps of self-reliance or self-despising versus a heart of being empowered by God’s presence.

The book covers a lot of material and gives stories that connect with life circumstances.  The book does this particularly well in the sections on community, rest, and mission.  Unfortunately, though well written, the chapters on suffering, loss, and pain left me longing for a more rigorous exploration that would delve deeper into the human heart struggles while aching with pain.

Overall, Empowered By His Presence is worth reading and calls the reader to allow their hearts to be examined by the Lord and then empowered by His presence.
